A short history

The efforts of showcasing Iosif Berman’s work, especially those of Ioana Popescu and her amazing work in Revista Martor, of those that digitized the photographs in their ownership (The National Library of Romania and the Museum of the Municipality of Bucharest), of those that keep researching his works (such as Atelierele Albe organisation, through Cezar Popescu) or exhibiting in the manners they found most fit are to be well applauded.

Perhaps the most well-known and commendable initiative is that of Alexandru Solomon, who directed a film to Iosif Berman: The Man with 1000 Eyes.
We must all yet agree and collaborate to restore the memory and imagery of Iosif Berman within the global photography history.

Here are a few starting points!

Owners of Iosif Berman’s photographic heritage

The Image Archive of the Romanian Peasant Museum, which holds a considerable number of glass cliches

The Museum of the Municipality of Bucharest, in possession of 28 photographs, which they have digitized here

The National Library of Romania, which holds 26 photographs , digitized here

The Stamps Cabinet of the Romanian Academy Library. Unknown number of photographs owned.

The Village Museum, which was built under Dimitrie Gusti‘s direction and which should still have Berman’s photography. We can see In their digital archive some photos from the building site of the museum and from the launch, in 1936 , very likely to have been taken by Berman (but the photographer’s name is not cited on any of them).

At the opening ceremony in 1936 Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister of India, and President Richard Nixon were present. Discover the Village Museum’s archive
Some photos, that were probably in the ownership of foreign press agencies, can be found today on stock image archives.

However valuable these initiatives are, we need to collaborate more, as curators, as researchers, as historians, as communication people, as exhibition designers, as heritage administrators to vitalize this impressive corpus of works!

Adults and children alike have so much to learn just by looking at Iosif Berman’s photography and short captions.
